- the client
Web development company
The client is a mobile and web application development company responsable for managing an optimization system for the transport of people and objects within a large hospital in Northern Italy.
- needs
The challenge to be faced
The main need was to optimize the assignment of a certain number of hospital transport tasks to the available staff.
- the project
Workload optimization system for hospital staff
The system developed by eLabor is based on the use of OptaPlanner and is provided as a service accessible via HTTP protocol. The purpose of the project is to assign to the available operators the transportation of patients or materials from one department to another, requested daily within the hospital structure, ensuring: the greatest possible punctuality in carrying out the transports, the minimization of operator movements, and a fair distribution of the workload.
Daily work planning
To achieve this, the system initially allows for the drafting of a daily work plan; should the actual working conditions differ from those initially planned, the plan can be reviewed in a very short time—within about a minute. This allows for a real-time work plan that is always up-to-date and optimized for the resources involved.
First phase
The project was developed in three phases (sprints). The first aimed at implementing data exchange, both incoming and outgoing.
Second phase
The second focused on achieving realistic scheduling, incorporating most of the constraints required for daily optimization.
Third phase
The third involved completing the remaining constraints yet to be implemented and computing ad hoc (real-time) optimization.
Thanks to this project, it was possible to optimize the daily scheduling of work, improve
the organization of operator movements, and enable a more balanced distribution of the
overall workload
